Q: Why did you decide to undertake the ACICIS internship program?

Studying in another country had always been a ‘bucket list’ goal for me. I was eager to learn another language and immerse myself in another culture. I also was interested to compare the similarities and differences of agricultural production in a more tropical climate.

Q: Did you receive a New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant? Do you think the NCP is an important initiative? If yes, why?

Yes, the possibility of receiving the mobility grant was a significant incentive to apply for the APP in the first place as it relieved financial stress.

Q: Where did you live in Indonesia (Kos, homestay, hotel, rental etc.)? Any tips for prospective students on finding accommodation?

I lived in a Kos for one month in Bogor without any other ACICIS students. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience since the home was also shared by other Indonesian people, whom I developed a connection with and had a more authentic experience of typical Indonesian lifestyles. I’d highly recommend staying in a Kos, despite the facilities not being as good as other options, since it also allowed me to further improve my skills in speaking Bahasa Indonesia.

Q: How have you found the academic components of this program – i.e. the language classes/seminars?

It was very interesting to converse with the various presenters and learn the complexity of agriculture in Indonesia. The language classes were very helpful and a good opportunity to build connections with the other ACICIS students.

Q: What organisation are you interning with? (Explain your role and responsibilities)

My internship was with NTFP-EP (Non Timber Forest Products) which was an awesome experience. My role during my time there was to translate a book about the use of Non-Timber Forest Products in Namo Village, in Central Sulawesi. Then, in the final week of my internship, we travelled to Sulawesi and I was able to present my translation to the authors and partnering organizations, and experience for myself how the forest products are collected and utilized.

Q: How have you found the work culture of your host organisation? How is it different to work experience in Australia?

Like most places in Indonesia, there was a real sense of community in the workplace I was interning at. I particularly enjoyed the shared mealtimes and social atmosphere of the organization. I made great connections with my work colleagues and hope to visit them again.

Q: What are the main skills you have learnt during your internship?

Learning to speak basic Bahasa Indonesia, adapting to cultural differences, learning to cook some Indonesian foods, lato lato, and establishing better independence in travelling.

Q: What did you find to be the most rewarding part of this experience?

The friendships and incredible memories I made during my time in Indonesia.

Q. Were you able to learn about the Indonesian culture from this program? If yes, how was this achieved?

Yes, I did this by intentionally seeking out opportunities to build connections with the local Indonesian people and making the most of every opportunity that was presented.

Q. How will the internship benefit or influence your future career?

Since my background knowledge of horticultural production in Australia greatly differs from the knowledge and experience I obtained from my internship, I left with more questions than I commenced with. However, I felt very much at home in Indonesia and am now trying to direct my career towards an aspect of agriculture that will allow me to return to Indonesia again.

Q. Would you recommend this program to your friends?

Yes absolutely. Indonesia is an incredible country. I’d highly recommend that participants go there with a mindset towards embracing the culture and making the most of opportunities.

Q. Favourite Indonesian word/phrase:

Lusa or semangat ya!
