Business Professional Practicum

Tyler Wilson was a participant in the 2020 Business Professional Practicum from Murdoch University. Tyler is studying a Bachelor of Business.

Q: Why did you decide to undertake ACICIS’ Business Professional Practicum?

Because it is summer break in Australia and I didn’t have anything to do for a few months, so I thought it would be a good idea to undertake the BPP and gain some experience in an internship, and also gain credit points towards my degree In Australia which will help me graduate earlier.

Q: Did you receive a New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant? If so, how did this contribute to your experience in Indonesia?

Yes, It covered my return flights to Indonesia and the course fee.

Q: How will the Business Professional Practicum benefit or influence your future career?

I was able to meet a lot of business professionals who are located in Jakarta and get some quality advice from them. The experience I gained at my internship will be very valuable in the future and I gained some workplace skills. I now have a larger number of professionals connected on linkedin and a couple of quality references to add to my resume.

Q: Which organisation did you intern with? What were your responsibilities?

I interned at Bis Industries. My responsibilities were to make a detailed report on the Indonesian oil and gas sector, and help our mentor with a few proposals being made to other organisations.

Q: How did you find the work culture of your host organisation? How was it different to work experience in Australia?

The work culture was relatively laid back, I would imagine in Australia it is more strict and formal. I haven’t interned in Australia before so I can’t really make any comparisons, but the culture seemed more friendly and relaxed than I would expect it to be in Australia.

Q: Would you like to return to work in Indonesia again in future?

Yes I would love to, though it might not be for a long time as it is difficult to get a job in Indonesia due to government regulations and visas etc.

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time in Indonesia?

I enjoyed visiting shopping malls, cafes, some tourist attractions (monas and kota tua) and going to bars and nighclubs on the weekends.

Q: Favourite Indonesian food ?

Pagi Sore – Masakan Padang.

Q: Favourite Indonesian word/phrase?

Jam Karet.

Q: What places in Indonesia have you visited during your practicum so far?

Only Jakarta.
