Ewan Maddock is a New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant recipient from University of Sydney. Ewan undertook the Development Studies Immersion Program (DSIP) in 2025.

What sparked your interest to choose Indonesia as your host country?

I had never been to Indonesia before and was interested in Indonesian culture and politics.

Did you receive a New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant? If so, how did this contribute to your experience in Indonesia?

Yes, the NCP Grant made it possible to take part in the program and fund the study.

How will the Development Studies Immersion Program help your future career or study?

It will be extraordinarily beneficial to my future study and career. As a social work student, cultural safety is a prominent aspect of any work we undertake with client and communities. Studying in Indonesia is providing a foundation for acknowledging and respecting the culture of others.

How do you like to spend your spare time in Indonesia?

Reading, trying new warung’s, going dancing, drinking coffee, hiking and travelling.

Will you recommend Acicis to other students?

Yes, I definitely would. It’s an excellent opportunity to undertake study in a different country in a well supported program with a variety of experiences, pathways, and people to meet.

Favorite Indonesian food & favorite place to eat?

Soto Ayam at Soto Ayam Gejayan.

Favourite Indonesian word/phrase? Why?

Ayo! It’s funny to yell out ayo to friends when we’re in a rush.
