Yakkum Emergency Unit

YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU) is one of YAKKUM (Christian Foundation for Public Health) units which was established in 2001. Its core mandate is the delivery of inclusive emergency response where community participation in need assessment and relief distribution are encouraged. YEU works to articulate initiatives to build community resilience through community-led disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. By the year 2017, YEU has been assisting more than 250 villages and partnering with more than 350 community-based organizations across Indonesia.

YEU manages a training center and guest house, Disaster Oasis, which is located in a quiet environment at the foot of Mount Merapi. Disaster Oasis is professionally managed to answer the need for a place of learning and recreation equipped with a wide range of information on disaster management in Indonesia and the world.

Since established in 2001, YEU  has responded to emergencies including the Dayak and Madura tribal conflicts; the influx of migrant workers in Nunukan and East Kalimantan; several floods in Central, East Java and Jakarta; the sectarian conflict in Poso; the religious-ethnic conflicts in Moluccas Islands; the Bali bombing; the Aceh tsunami and Nias earthquake (2004/2005); Yogyakarta earthquake (2006); West Java tsunami and earthquake (2007); and the latest West Sumatra earthquake (2009) and Mentawai tsunami (2010). YEU is also active in Myanmar responding to the Nargis cyclone in 2008 till now and is aligned with other faith based humanitarian organizations in Indonesia under Humanitarian Forum Indonesia which enabled YEU to support the joint humanitarian action in Gaza in 2009.

Three of these main areas of work are:

  1. Responding to environmental disasters with relief-recovery plans along with a long-term development strategy
  2. Responding to victims of conflict along with peace building across communities
